New "Plastic Kidney" is compact, easy to handle, Pittsburgh, Pa. -- No larger than a small, floor-model radio, the new Westinghouse "plastic kidney" can be transported quickly from hospital to hospital to meet emergencies. Push-button controls on the outside regulate all functions of the "kidney" from blood purification to sterilization of the unit. The new unit was developed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation engineers George W. Jernstedt and Harry H. Barker at the request of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. A second "kidney" is now in successful operation at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh
