Covering his ears, Sargent Gary Whitney (below, left) manned a radio as Staff Sargent Jerry Smith prepared to fire a 60 caliber machine gun. Both are from Reedsburg. The exercises were designed to give about 70 members of Troop E, the only cavalry unit in the state, winter weather training. Troop E has responsibility for defending the Badger plant. The drills enabled the men to become familiar with the installation (Wisconsin) (National Guard) (Machine guns)
