1963 Press Photo Artists charted history of Russell Cave in Northern Alabama
Artists of the National Geographic Society have charted the history of Russell Cave in Northern Alabama. Charcoal 8,000 years old was found at the lowest level yet uncovered, 14 feet down. A cave resident was buried at about the time the Great Pyramid of Egypt was under construction. The last date of Indian occupation was 1650, thirty years after the landing of the Pilgrims. Smithsonian archaeologists rank Russell Cave as a major discovery. No other site in North America has yielded such a detailed record covering so long a time span.
