1966 Press Photo Dr. Nelson D. Holmquist, Louisiana State professor of pathology

Dr. Nelson D. Holmquist, associate professor of pathology, Louisiana State University Medical School, and Miss Betty Brousseau, technologist, inspect new automatic cell counting equipment at the medical school. The device separates normal cells from cancerous cells in about 1 1/2 minutes whereas a technologist takes from five to 10 minutes. The cell counter includes three units. The cell sample is scanned in unit at right. The middle unit counts the cells which were measured electronically in the first unit. The third unit (extreme left) plots the results on a graph. If New Orleans cancer-fighters decide to launch a mass screening campaign for detection of cervical cancer, they may be faced with a real problem.

Photo is dated 1966.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
