Elswyth Thane, prolific biographer - Martha Custis Washington is nominally the subject of prolific biographer Thane's study, but Martha is used mostly as a reflecting mirror for her remarkable husband. Her shadow gains substance only from the commanding figure of Washington and the fact of their congenial marriage. Martha destroyed all but two of the many letters she and her husband exchanged. Her rather pedestrian letters to others leave the outlines of her personality tantalizingly blurred.
