1974 Press Photo New Riverfront Belvedere-Plaza, site of Summer of '74 events.

When in Louisville during the "Summer of '74" celebration, do as the natives do. That means digging into French bread and cheese. German strudel after German sausages, Irish stew washed down with green Irish beer, grits with country ham and red-eye gravy, soul-satisfying fried pies, and spicy meatball sandwiches along with the finger-licking-good fried chicken. Just a hundred years ago, half the population of the City by the Falls was foreign-born and much of the other half was made up of direct descendants of immigrants. The term "cosmopolitan" just doesn't do Louisville justice. Partly to remedy the situation and partly out of community pride during the super "Summer of '74." Louisville will be telling the nation about its ancestors during special Heritage Weekends. With much sampling of native foods and joining in songs and dances with costumed descendants, the marvelous melting pot character of Louisville will become tasteable, touchable and more enjoyable than ever.
