1974 Press Photo Beautiful scenery of mountains in Wales' Railway system
Wales (Tal y Llyn Railroad). Wales is the rail buff's paradise. There are more odd little huffers and puffers still doing their daily thing than anywhere in the world. At top left is the Tal-y-Lyn Railroad, which chuffs up into the mountains of North Wales. At top right is the Ffestiniog Railway, which goes from nowhere at sea level to nowhere at mountain-top level amidst beautiful scenery in Northwest Wales. At lower left, is the mountain rack railway which carries visitors five miles up to the summit of Britain's highest mountain, Snowdon. This is the view from the summit. At lower right is British Rail's only one remaining steam-hauled train, the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which goes from near Aberystwyth, site of Wales University, up into the rugged mountains of the interior.
